Gardening Workshops

Get your hands in the dirt and learn to garden! All workshops are held at Bitta-Blue Farm 228 River Road in Killingworth, Connecticut. Registration in advance is required and unless noted, all are adult classes.

Spring 2024 Classes

  • Vegetable Kickstart Workshop

    Date TBA

    Hands on seed starting class for the kitchen garden. Learn how to direct sow, pot-on and plant vegetable seeds, bulbs and tubers with a discussion of garden set up, planning how much and when to grow which crops, as well as tips to maintain your garden organically. Intensive planting strategies to get the most out of small gardens or raised beds, and succession planting will also be covered. Go home with a starter kit appropriate to the season.

  • Flower Power

    Date: Saturday April 27th, 10:00-11:00 AM

    Annual and Perennial flower propagation workshop. We will decipher basic flower terminology such as biennial, herbaceous perennial as well as strategies to grow and care for each. We will learn how to plant from seed, root, and bulb as well as by cutting and division. Finally, we will address tips for successful ground preparation, planting, how to increasing blooms, and maintenance of your flower garden using the best practices of organic land care. Basic principles of site assessment to help you identify the flowers that will do best in your yard will also be covered.

  • Herb Workshop

    All about Herbs! We will take a look at the range of plants in this category of edibles considering the diverse growing needs (water, sun, temperature) and which are perennial in our area. We will learn how to propagate herbs from seed and cutting as well as tips for identifying healthy plants in garden centers. The class spotlights container planting including spacing and soil needs for success and you will go home with your own mini herb garden.
